Daily Schedule
We study several subjects each day. Most subjects take between 20 - 45 minutes. If we need to take a deeper dive into a lesson, we extend that class length, and take from another knowing that over time the lessons will even out. Subjects are listed in the order they are presented, with approximate lengths beside them. See more details for each subject below this sample schedule.
- 1 Gathering Time, 10-20 min
- 2 Language Learning, 20-30 min
- 3 Science, 30-45 min
- 4 Recess, 15-20 min
- 5 History, 25-35 min
- 6 Geography + Social Studies (alternating monthly), 30-45 min
- 7 Math + Creative Writing (alternating monthly), 20-30 min
Gathering Time
If you’ve ever walked into a party or gathering before it starts you know it can be awkward and anxiety-inducing. Since students rarely show up at exactly the same time, it feels important to have something for the early-arrivers to do while they on-timers or few-minutes-laters make it.
Our gathering activity is something kids can jump into the minute they come to class, so they can avoid all of those “I don’t know what to do” feelings.
The gathering activity will continue until all students arrive and have a chance to participate for at least a few minutes.
Language Learning
Learning a second language can be fun and empowering! We study two languages, Sign Language and Spanish, alternating each month. Our study is fun and engaging, including songs, useful words, and conversational phrases.
Science
We study from The Good and The Beautiful science units, and get through one unit per month...long enough to learn a lot and short enough that it doesn't get old before it's over. Each session (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) will take deep dives into some parts of the unit, and shallow dives in others to accomodate students who come to class more than once per week.
Science can sometimes feel boring and full of facts that are easy to forget. Our science units are full of fun experiments and activites to help science come to life!
Of special note:
As part of our Fall 2025 class unit on Amphibians, Reptiles + Fish we will be raising tadpoles and observing their metamorphasis into frogs.
As part of our Spring 2026 class unit on birds we will incubate chicken and duck eggs and watch them hatch and grow.
Recess/PE
Kids need to move and take breaks! We take the opportunity every day for the kids to get outside and move their bodies so they are ready for their next subject. Games are also a practical way to learn to interact with others and learn communication and sportsmanship. We introduce all kinds of sports, games, and activities including tetherball, basketball, tennis, croquet, jumprope, baseball, four square, volleyball, kickball, soccer, lacrosse, bocce ball, cross net, and more!
On days when weather is an issue we stay inside and play ping pong, pool, charades, board games, card games, and math games.
History
History is full of incredible stories! We steer clear of memorizing boring dates and facts, and instead focus on stories which are engaging and memorable.
For our history units we read picture books and novels revolving around a specific period in history. The novels we read are historical fiction and often include true stories about kids who do heroic things. Each session (Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday) works through a different historical fiction novel to accommodate kids who come to more than one session per week.
Kids are encouraged to do something with their hands as we read, keeps them busy, but miraculously helps them focus at the same time. Activities include, coloring, building quietly with Lincoln Logs or blocks, creating shapes with geometric blocks, playing sudoku, puzzles, origami, play-doh, etc.
Geography + Social Studies
Geography and Social Studies alternate each month. Our goals are to learn how our world is laid out (where states, countries, continents, etc are located), and how it works together (the Social Studies piece).
Our geography lessons are hands-on and often include art in different mediums including play-doh, salt-dough, wikki sticks (wax sticks), yarn, paint, markers, etc. Games are also a big part of learning the interesting parts of these subjects.
Government, economics, and civics is included in age-appropriate (and always fun!) lessons.
Math + Creative Writing
As each student is in a different level of personal math study, our group math study revolves around games and projects that include math, measuring, multiplication facts, etc. For example our study of fractions involves creating fractions by cutting paper plates or circles made of play-doh, as well as some simple cooking.
Creative writing is code for learning to make the written word more engaging by including interesting, relevant details, and replacing boring, overused words like "very" and "awesome" with new more descriptive vocabulary. We do this by working together to improve sentences and creating our own writing projects like comic strips, newspapers, short stories, and letters to friends + family.
Extra Long Days
November and December each include only 3 weeks of class to accommodate for family time during the holiday season. To make up for the missed week, classes will be extra long the week before Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. Instead of running from 9am-12pm, class will run from 9am-2:30pm. On these days students should bring a sack lunch.
